I did the grocery shopping for our household this week, which I used to do a lot more often, but haven’t done regularly in a while. This was the first time in a while that I went on a peak time, Saturday at mid-morning. As I worked my way up and down the aisles, I couldn’t help but notice the number of people looking through coupons they were holding in their hands as they looked for items on the shelves.
At first I didn’t realize it, but after seeing 3 or 4 people in the 1st aisle or two I went down, it hit me that a lot more people seemed to be using coupons than I remember in the past.
As I wound my way through the remaining aisles, I noticed quite a few other people- a mix of different ages, both men and women, couples, even single guys-which I don’t remember seeing a whole lot of in the past! (Well I don’t really know their marital status, but they were shopping solo.)
Coupons are “in”, everyone wants to save money
Maybe it was just a coincidence, but I don’t think so. When I used to do all of my shopping on Saturday mornings, I always felt like I was the only solo guy shopper using coupons. I am sure I wasn’t but I know I was outnumbered! I never felt embarrassed to use coupons, but i am sure there was a stigma attached to being a coupon shopper for some people-or they thought it was a waste of time. Apparently, with the state of the economy these days, a lot of people have realized that every dollar saved helps.

I use coupons too!!! My use is only about less than a year long but I must admit I love doing it and I am beating myself over the head for not starting sooner.
The coupons that have been out recently were not very good but I am thinking they will get better as companies realize that more and more people are interested in saving money by using coupons.
@lulugal- Better late than never! Sometimes the coupons aren’t that great- but I have noticed that more so lately-makes me wonder if that is due to the economy as well.
I’ve been on the coupon bandwagon about a year now. It’s been an incredible shift for our family. We used to spend stupid amounts of money shopping for groceries and household items every week. Now my average spending for a family of 5, including household items and food, runs about $100 a week. I even wrote a book on how to do it yourself.
@Momma- Sounds like you have gotten a pretty good system down in a short period of time- $100 a week sounds really good!
