The best way to avoid college student credit card debt is to keep in mind and understand the concept that credit card is not free money.

Don’t treat credit card any different from hard cash. Refrain from overspending and don’t get tempted to buy things you don’t even need just because they are on sale. One smart move is to prepare and follow religiously a monthly budget - and don’t budge from it! Another preventive measure is to resist the lure of a second credit card.

Some students are inclined to go for multiple credit cards as credit limit for student credit cards is usually low. You have to realize that this is a sure-fire recipe for getting into college student credit card debt and this is where the debt build-up often starts. One credit card is really more than enough for any student.

College student credit card is supposed to be a “training instrument” to learn more about handling credit. Don’t turn it into an instrument to get into unmanageable debt.

@Tom- You have a good point, I don't think that it is a problem for most people to carry it, but if someone uses it more often than the should, especially in social situations, it might not be a bad idea to leave it at home sometimes.

Actually, leaving the card at home may not be the best idea.
I keep my credit card with me at all times, mostly for emergency purposes.
I only purchase something on it if I know i can pay it off within like one week.
