I have 2 teenagers (a boy/girl set of 14 yoa set of twins), and believe me, it's a "long and hard trip UPHILL", but I'm in the process of "imprinting" the importance of being considered/respected/known as a dependable person. Getting up too late, not "Planning Forward (for church on Saurday and/or school on Monday), has the consequence of walking to school that day(though not the 15 miles through 2 feet of snow like "I had to" ; ) during my childhood), or cancellation of all their after-church "fun" activities planned. It takes true "tough love" to leave them when they don't make it to the car on-time (my motto: "the train can be late; just don't be late for the train"). I admit that several times when it's raining or snowing (we live in the Great State of Kansas), I've went back to get them, but they'll only had to walk a few times before they finally said "Dad, I GET IT!"

@trainee investor:
Thanks for visiting!
You bring up a couple of very good tips as well. Being able to engage someone in conversation is very important in my book.

That's a good list. I'd add (i) education in the sense of learning a little bit about as wide a range of subjects as possible. It makes it so much easier to keep a conversation going and t o show an interest in a subject that someone is passionate about if you know enough to ask some questions which show at least a minimal level of knowledge and (ii) being well read (both fiction and non-fiction). Being able to talk about books (topical or not) conveys and impression.
